Florentine School of the 18th (?) century
The Annunciation to the Virgin, oil on copper, 37 x 41 cm, framed,
The present painting is one of numerous copies of the famous image of the Miraculous Madonna, which was painted around 1360 by a follower of Giotto and is in the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata, the mother church of the Servite order, in Florence. Legend has it that the painter of the picture repeatedly failed to adequately render the Madonna’s face, until one night an angel came to finish it.
