(Wolkenburg 1848-1911 Munich) Christmas Night, signed F. v. Uhde, oil on canvas, 82.5 x 100.5 cm, framed, (Rei)

Fritz von Uhde was an army officer as well as a painter. He received his initial artistic training at the Academy in Dresden, although quickly discontinuing these studies. In 1876 he travelled to Vienna to be taken on as a pupil by Makart. Makart, however, refused him, and so von Uhde moved to Munich to attend the Academy there. His works are distinguished by their particularly intense focus on colouring, the result of his studies of original Impressionist and Old Master paintings during trips to Paris and Holland.
