Marie Alexnadrovna, née von Hessen und bei Rhein was the youngest of seven children. In 1838 the Tsesarevich Alexander Nikolayevich fell in love with the then 14-year old Marie when travelling through Europe in search of a wife. The couple married in1841 despite initial opposition from the future Tsar’s mother. Although the damp climate of St Petersburg was deleterious to Marie’s health, she bore eight children. The death of her oldest son, Tsesarevich Nicholas, in 1865 was a heavy blow for her. She died in 1880 in St Petersburg.
