(born Graz in 1959) Untitled, on the reverse signed, dated Brandl Dec. 2003, oil on canvas, 80 x 100 cm, on a stretcher, (K)
Provenance:
Private Property, Vienna
... In his work Brandl does not turn away from attempting a noble discourse on abstraction. Instead he tries to create space for a style of painting neither sentimental nor cynical. In this work the self is set no bounds. Where a philosophical statement might begin, here emptiness is permitted to spread. It is important to the artist to withdraw as far as possible from absolute terms, placing him at the periphery of Postmodernism, effectively directly adjacent to that excessive affirmative Abstraction from which a painter such as Polke continues to wrench new aspects. According to Brandl, painting is about a form of nothingness - an un-creating, that wishes to be on a par with the “free spirit”.
