Lot No. 1401

Dadamaino (Eduarda Maino) *

(Milan 1930–2004) “Volume”, on the stretcher titled, signed, dated Dadamaino 1958, waterpaint on canvas, with 2 openings, 60 x 50 cm, stretcher, (PP)

Photo certificate:
Archivio Dadamaino, Milan, 26 October 2011, no. 399/11

Provenance:
Private Collection, Italy

Dadamaino’s search for artistic renewal arose from the experience of Dadaism and the analytic questioning of traditional art. At the end of the 1950s the Italian worked with unpainted or black coloured canvases in which she cut large oval openings. The work here, “Volume”, executed in 1958, is a canvas painted with black waterpaint with two large oval-shaped holes. Her method of slicing into the canvas is reminiscent of Lucio Fontana’s technique. However, the size of the cuts, which take up almost the entire canvas, effectively incorporates the wall upon which the work is hung, rendering it an active element of the work itself.
