Lot No. 231

A rare "Polycor" chair,

designed by Luigi Colani in 1968, manufactured by COR Sitzkomfort, Germany, fibreglass reinforced polyester, paper label: COR, height 78 cm, width 52 cm, depth 65 cm, height of seat 43 cm, (DR)

Provenance: private ownership, Germany, purchased from COR c. 1970 - private collection, Cologne.

Lit.: M. Eislingen, Stühle des 20. Jahrhunderts, 1994, cover photograph - A. Bangert, Colani - Die Kunst Zukunft zu gestalten, 2004, pp. 114/15 - Experiment 70. Designvisionen von Luigi Colani und Günter Beltzig, Museum für Konkrete Kunst, Ingolstadt 2002, pp. 111/12.

The only known example with an original COR label. From a preliminary series of approximately ten. Because of the complicated manufacturing process, this chair was never produced in series. Colani’s loop chair, cast as a single piece, combines the idea of a one-legged plastic chair (Saarinen) and a cantilever chair (Panton) and probably was the plastic chair that was most difficult to produce. The bubble shaped seat shell is balanced on a single leg that extends into a base. In spite of the complex technical requirements, the result was an object of utmost elegance and rhythm, due to the object’s dynamically shaped loop. Only some ten pieces were manufactured in different colours, probably because of the demanding production process. Colani himself commented upon his "Polycor": "The most complicated chair currently manufactured. It features a daring bent achieved through polyester injection technology." Designs exploiting technology to its limits are associated with the future-oriented outlook prevalent in those days and the belief in the unlimited possibilities of the age of space travel.
