Josef Kähsmann received his first formation in the studio of his father Franz Kähsmann. When he was a student at the Vienna Academy he was awarded several medallions and won prizes for his copies after ancient statues. Between 1823 and 1829 Kähsmann held a fellowship at the Vienna Academy in Rome, where he was promoted by the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. After he had returned to Vienna, he was appointed professor. The work by Kähsmann comprises antique busts and religious depictions as well as reliefs and paintings with mytholgical figures. He was mainly commissioned by Hungarian aristocrats, for whose parks and gardens he created several works. Kähsmann is considered the last representative of Vienna classicism.
