Circle of Ignaz Stern (Mauerkirchen 1679 – 1748 Rome)
Allegory of the Habsburg dynasty, oil on canvas, 74 x 98.5 cm, framed
Dr Werner Telesko, to whom we are grateful for his assistance with the cataloguing of this picture, is of the opinion that this painting was produced within a Habsburg context. Evidence for that is the Habsburg mitred crown and the notched crown, which are remarkably similar to those that Joseph II had made for himself in 1764. The ermine fur on which the young prince is lying also fits within the context of the insignia. We are also grateful to Dr Gerda Mraz, who reads the crown to the lower right as originating in Spanish royal circles, this thus being a picture dealing with the Spanish succession.
