The lovesick Antiochus (after Plutarch, Vergleichende Lebensbeschreibungen XLII), monogrammed (on the bedpost): GTDR (ligated), oil on canvas, 76 x 126 cm, framed
Provenance:
Rhenish private collection.
This picture tells the story of the lovesick king’s son, Antiochus. The doctor, Demetrios discovers as the cause of the prince’s illness his desperate and unrequited love for his mother-in-law, Stratonike. With regal magnanimity, his father sets his wife free, in order to rescue his son. This painting was attributed incorrectly to the French Classicist, Anne Louis Girodet-Trioson (1767–1824) on the basis of the monogram.
