Madonna enthroned with the Child, below whom St. Joseph, Sebastian, George and Roch, oil on canvas, 51.7 x 29.8 cm, framed
We are grateful to Prof Ugo Ruggeri, who was able to authenticate this painting as the work of Diziani on the basis of photographs. The picture is accompanied by a certificate from Prof Ruggeri.
After training in Belluno, Diziani moved to Venice, where he entered the workshops of Gregorio Lazzarini, and then later Sebastiano Ricci. Between 1710 and 1720, he executed paintings and frescos for several churches in Venice. Numerous oil sketches and bozzetti are known from this period. Diziani was also a successful set designer, who worked in this capacity not only in Venice, but also in Munich and Dresden. In 1726 he travelled to Rome, where he painted a (today lost) decorative scheme for the Church of San Lorenzo in Damaso, commissioned to do so by Cardinal Ottoboni. The decorative painting of Diziani exhibits the influence of his contemporary, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, although not the light coloration of his works.
