Melchior Brassauw (Mechelen 1709-after 1757 Antwerp)
A young girl holding a partridge, oil on panel, 12.2 x 11.2 cm, framed
Brassauw, who came from Mecheln, worked for his entire life in Antwerp. His genre scenes mostly depict musicians and festivities (see the painting held by the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam). They are always created in the moment and his portraits are vivid, occasionally heightened encapsulations of character. In painterly terms, he employed a richly contrasting juxtaposition of coarsely treated garments and finely worked areas of skin.
