Herman van der Mijn was a pupil of Ernst Stuven. In 1712 he moved from Amsterdam to Antwerp, and then a year later to Düsseldorf, where he worked until 1716 as court painter to the Prince Elector of the Palatinate, Johann Wilhelm. From 1721 onwards, van der Mijn lived in London. He quickly made a name for himself there with elegant, small-format portraits.
