Attributed to Johann Le Ducq (The Hague 1629/30-1676/77)
Two greyhounds, monogrammed indistinctly on their collars with the monogram of the owner: CRN, oil on canvas, 39 x 39 cm, in an 18th-century tortoiseshell frame
Johann Le Ducq was a pupil of Paulus Potter, but his rare paintings, nonetheless, exhibit a close stylistic relationship with his contemporary, Karel Dujardin. His drawings of animals and figures are normally very precise and demonstrate his very fine observational skills. Le Ducq is known, above all, for his depictions of dogs. A counterpart to the present painting, entitled Young huntsman with hunting dogs, was auctioned at Sotheby’s, New York, as lot 334 on 15.04.2008.
