Gottfried de Wedig was the most important portrait painter to the wealthy and self-confident patrician families living in the free Imperial city of Cologne during the first half of the 17th century. He generally depicted his sitters life-size and half-length. Wedig was the grandson of the portrait painter, Barthel Bruyn II.
