Carlo Ceresa (San Giovanni Bianco 1609–1679 Bergamo)

Carlo Ceresa (San Giovanni Bianco 1609–1679 Bergamo) - Old Master Paintings

Portrait of a nobleman, oil on canvas, 134 x 108 cm, framed
Inscription upper right: ÆT. SVÆ. 38 / AO 1637

We are grateful to Professor Ugo Ruggeri, Venice, who has identified this painting as a work by Ceresa (certificate dated July 2011).

Ceresa was probably the most important portrait painter of his epoch in Bergamo and one of the most important portrait painters from northern Italy. This painting illustrates why he earned this reputation. The sitter is presented to the viewer in an uncompromising frontality. This very individual portrait is rendered by means of a detailed depiction of the sitter’s physiognomic features. The monochrome background heightens this effect, an artistic ploy reminiscent of Flemish precedents, although the influence of Spain may be seen in the starkness of the work. Ceresa’s fame was established by his impressive portraits of the Venetian aristocracy.
