Circle of Pietro Paolo Bonzi (Cortona 1576-1636 Rom)

Circle of Pietro Paolo Bonzi (Cortona 1576-1636 Rom) - Old Master Paintings

A wide river landscape with peasants shearing sheep, oil on canvas, 102 x 165 cm, framed

The influence of Jan Wildens is evident in the present painting. Various experts have considered the artist to be an Italian landscape painter influenced by Flemish work. Anna Orlando and Mary Newcome-Schleier have, however, excluded the possibility that this painting was executed in Genoa, the city in which Wildens produced comparable landscapes with the brothers, de Wael. Newcome-Schleier points to Rome and dates the picture to circa 1630. It exhibits several stylistic parallels with the work of Pietro Paolo Bonzi and his circle. A comparable painting by Bonzi is to be found at the Pinacoteca Capitolina in Rome. Bonzi’s landscapes were influenced by Flemish artists, with the work of Paul Bril frequently being assumed to have been the precedent.
