Fraichot was born into a family of artists in Eastern France and mainly painted portraits and genre scenes. Between 1774 and 1792, he worked as a teacher of drawing at the local École de Peinture. In recent years, several signed still lifes by Fraichot that are comparable to the present painting have appeared on the art market.
