Garemijn, who is considered one of the most important exponents of Flemish Neoclassicism, became a professor at the Academy of Bruges in 1756. He is primarily known for his religious scenes and decorative programmes. Because of its elegance and classical smoothness, the present painting represents a major work within the artist’s oeuvre. Comparable paintings by his hand are preserved in the Groeninge Museum in Bruges.
