Pietro Muttoni, called Pietro della Vecchia (Venice or Vicenza 1602/3 – 1678 Venice)

Pietro Muttoni, called Pietro della Vecchia (Venice or Vicenza 1602/3 – 1678 Venice) - Old Master Paintings

Portrait of a Bravo, oil on canvas, 130 x 97 cm, framed

Pietro della Vecchia was able to absorb the styles of Venetian 16th Century artists such as Giorgione, Titian, Palma Vecchio, Lorenzo Lotto and Romanino, while incorporating Carravaggesque elements into his painting. Among his favourite subjects were character heads as seen in the Soldier with Plumed Hat in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, as well as half-length figures like the present painting or a Man Drawing His Sword in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. He also depicted genre scenes of soldiers playing dice and musical parties, such as in The Concert, in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin. Some of his themes, such as Socrates and Two Pupils in the Prado in Madrid, reflect the interests of the literary Accademia degli Incogniti, a learned society of freethinking intellectuals, mainly noblemen, who significantly influenced the cultural and political life of mid-17th-Century Venice. In the wide range of his official and private commissions, Della Vecchia’s art reflects many aspects of 17th Century Venetian taste.

The attribution was confirmed by Rodolfo Pallucchini in a letter from 1969.
