Abraham Brueghel (Antwerp 1631–1697 Naples)

Abraham Brueghel (Antwerp 1631–1697 Naples) - Old Master Paintings

Silenus with centaurs, leopards, and a butt filled with fruit against a wide river landscape, signed at lower right: Brughel F., oil on canvas, 77 x 100 cm, framed

Abraham Brueghel was the son of Jan Brueghel the Younger. He lived in Rome from 1659 on, where he soon became one of the leading still life painters. For his magnificent and decorative still lifes, in many of which appear one or several figures, he borrowed from Mario Nuzzi, Cerquozzi and Michelangelo Pace. In 1670, Brueghel was admitted to the Accademia di S. Luca. In 1675, the painter moved to Naples, where he spent the rest of his life. He brought to Naples the monumental style which at the time had reached its acme in Roman still life painting. For the present painting, Brueghel collaborated with the Neapolitan artist Nicola Malinconico (c. 1654–1721), who painted the figures.
