Cornelis de Wael (Antwerp 1592–1667 Rome)
A Mediterranean coastal landscape with a embarking galley and ships lying in the roads, oil on canvas, 74 x 97.3 cm, framed
Between 1613 and 1656, Cornelis de Wael ran a flourishing workshop in Genoa and mainly became famous for his view of ports and coastlines, the present painting represents a characteristic example. In Genoa, he founded the “Cenacolo Fiammingo”, where many young artists were trained. The significance of the brothers De Wael is indicated by the fact that the young Anthony van Dyck initially joined their workshop during his stay in Genoa. A double portrait of the two brothers, which Van Dyck painted in the 1620s, attests to their close relationship. The present painting is probably a joint product by the brothers Lucas and Cornelis de Wael. Cornelis was specialized in figures, whereas Lucas was predominantly a landscape painter.
