Christoph Fesel (Ochsenfurt 1737–1805 Würzburg)

Christoph Fesel (Ochsenfurt 1737–1805 Würzburg) - Old Master Paintings

The Rape of the Sabines, signed and dated 1801 lower right, on the reverse also signed and dated, oil on canvas, 102 x 132 cm, framed

Christoph Fesel was one of the exponents of Roman Neoclassicism in Southern Germany. Having completed his education in Würzburg, he went to Rome, where he entered the workshop of Pompeo Batoni. In 1763, the young painter became a professor at the Accademia di San Luca and later on joined the workshop of Anton Raphael Mengs. Because of the latter’s departure for Madrid (1761), the artist was put in charge of the workshop together with Anton von Maron. As a consequence, Fesel became one of the most popular portraitists in Rome besides Maron. In the 1760s, Fesel accompanied an English traveller to Greece as a draughtsman in order to study and document the sites of classical antiquity. The present composition also betrays his skills as a draughtsman and his knowledge of antique architecture. Having returned to Würzburg, Fesel was appointed chamber painter to the prince-bishop and senior court painter. In 1803, Fesel advanced to the position of Electoral Palatine and Bavarian superintendent of picture galleries in Munich.
