Allegory of the Five Senses, oil on canvas, 110 x 168 cm, framed
We are grateful to Dr. Klaus Ertz for identifying Jan Brueghel II as the painter of the landscape, the animals and the still lifes and Hendrick van Balen as the painter of the figures, together with the participation of his workshop.
Certificate:
Dr Klaus Ertz (2012).
This hitherto unpublished painting is an important rediscovery in the oeuvre of Jan Brueghel II. Its extraordinary intense and brilliant colours, which lend it an almost jewel-like appearance, was in line with the taste of contemporary aristocratic collectors.
The present picture’s uncommonly large size suggests that it was commissioned by a member of the court. From an elevated vantage point, the spectator views a forest clearing with an assembly of the familiar personifications of the Five Senses, accompanied by their attributes. The overall composition of this group of figures conveys an impression of Baroque sensuality. Here Brueghel appears to have closely followed antique myths and iconographic traditions.
Dr Ertz assumes that the figures were painted by Hendrick van Balen, probably with workshop assistance. The large format is unusual and points to a special circumstances surrounding the commission, so that this work is an interesting addition to the oeuvre of the Antwerp master. Around 1600, such precious collectibles were in great demand on the expanding European art market because of their technique.
