Traditionally the present paintings, which represent imaginary landscapes dominated by the presence of imposing architectural forms and animated by numerous small figures, have been attributed to Francesco Battaglioli, however the paintings are instead attributable to Giorgio Fossati on the basis of an inscription that is on the reverse of one of the two canvases that reads: Giorgio Fossati Architetto, e’ Publico/Perito Pi.t 1771.
Fossati originated from the Canton Ticino but moved to Venice where he worked as an architect. He practiced many disciplines including painting architectural views, landscapes and imaginary views. He was also an able draughtsman and a prolific engraver, in addition to practicing architecture in Venice and other North Italian cities.
