Baldassare de Caro - a pair (2)

Baldassare de Caro - a pair (2) - Old Master Paintings

(Naples 1689–1750)
A pair of fruit and flower still lifes,
one signed with a monogram lower left: BDC,
oil on canvas, each 65 x 76.5 cm, framed, a pair (2)

Little is known of Baldassarre de Caro’s biography. In his Vite (which appeared in Naples in 1745), Bernardo de Dominici reports about the progress that De Caro made in Naples under his teacher Andrea Belvedere. De Caro was also an excellent animal painter and specialised in hunting still lifes and hunting scenes – which can also be seen in the present combinations of fruit and hunting still lifes. These two works also display another characteristic trait of this painter, as he borrowed from the animal painters from the Neapolitan school, primarily Giuseppe and Giovan Battista Recco. He was also influenced by the Flemish still life tradition, and was particularly influenced by Frans Snyders, Jan Fyt, and David Coninck. De Caro’s works were highly coveted among collectors of the Neapolitan Settecento.
