(Memmingen 1640–1704 Augsburg)
An Allegory of Autumn,
oil on canvas, 103 x 89 cm, framed
The present painting comes with a certificate issued by Peter Königfeld (2008). Königfeld writes: “There can be no doubt that this Allegory of Autumn is a work by the hand of Johann Heiss, who dealt with the subject repeatedly. The present work is particularly closely related to a version preserved in Augsburg for which the artist used an almost identical repertoire of figures, with minor alterations suggesting that the latter work dates from a slightly earlier period. […] The painterly quality, which can also be observed in the details, the extraordinarily meticulously rendered faces, and the rich palette of brownish, greyish, and greenish hues all speak in favour of an autograph work. The painting can be considered an important addition to the known oeuvre of Johann Heiss.”
