Giovanni Stanchi, called dei Fiori
(Rome 1608–1674)
A flower still life,
oil on canvas, 97 x 72 cm, framed
We are grateful to Alberto Cottino for suggesting the attribution. A written report accompanies the present lot.
This elegant still life was painted by Giovanni Stanchi, one of the major exponents of Roman eighteenth-century still life painting. Giovanni Stanchi was the head of a studio where he worked with his talented brothers Niccolò and Angelo and where they executed commissions for collectors of the leading Roman families, such as the Barberini and Orsini. His style marks the shift from Carravaggesque naturalism towards the more elegant and idealised Roman High Baroque. He probably attended Verrocchio’s studio, which was one of the most important workshops in Rome during the first half of the seventeenth century. Giovanni Stanchi excelled in his ability to bring fruits and flowers to life through truly effective illusionistic devices. The present floral bouquet is impressive, with irises, tulips and peonies all depicted with great stylistic virtuosity and bright colouring.
