We are grateful to Michiel Franken of the RKD, who observes: “Judging from the digital image, I think that the portrait of the boy was painted in the 1630s by a talented painter from Rembrandt’s immediate circle.”
Rembrandt’s production was frequently accompanied by workshop copies and variants. Rembrandt’s contemporaries, especially the art lovers and painters among them, must have been familiar with these works, given the frequency with which they could see them reproduced in their widespread etched versions. The present painting is a beautiful example of the high quality produced by Rembrandt’s studio from the 1630s.
