Lot No. 31 -

School of Verona, 16th Century

School of Verona, 16th Century - Old Master Paintings

Portrait of a man,
inscribed upper right: DOMINICHO RADISE,
oil on canvas, 100.4 x 75 cm, framed

The present painting represents a gentleman, half-length, seen in three-quarter view; his gaze is turned towards the viewer. In his left hand he holds a pair of gloves, while in his right, he probably holds a letter, only a part of which can be seen in the painting, while the rest extends beyond the confines of the canvas and is not visible. The rose flesh tones of his features and of his auburn beard and hair emerge from the dark colours of the gentleman’s robes and background, which dominate the work.

This composition belongs to a type that was widely dispersed in Northern Italy throughout the sixteenth century. Similar examples can be found in works produced in Bergamo from Giovanni Cariani to Giovanni Battista Moroni. Such productions, together with those from Venice, must have influenced artistic activity in other cities on the mainland such as Verona.
