Miss Walker
Topaz and black glass, fused in a mould, cut, pasted, signed I Bílek 89, 44 × 39 × 15 cm (Zí)
exhibited
Glasgalerie Hittfeld, Hamburg, 1989
Ilja Bílek graduated from the AAAD in Prague from prof. Stanislav Libenský’s glassmaking studio. Since finishing his studies, he has been designing works for the glassworks in Železný Brod and is also a freelance artist. In 1996, he became the head of the Glass Studio at the Faculty of Art and Design at the University of J. E. Purkyně in Ústí nad Labem. He primarily works with the technique of fused sculpture, which he uses to create objects that often combine the structure of geometric surfaces with different types of glass. He sees his glass compositions spatially. The substance of his sculptures is dynamically transformed depending on how it is viewed.
The piece Miss Walker is from a series of pedestrians that he created in the second half of the 1980s. In this series, the tension between two blocks of multi-colored glass is emphasized. The author liked to use opaque black glass, which has contrasting optical qualities with the other, lighter blocks of glass.
