Richard van Bleeck began his artistic career with history painting, although he would turn later almost exclusively to portrait painting. Bleeck was one of the most typical exponents of the Dutch classicism which developed out of a symbiosis between the fine painting of Leiden and the French academic style around the turn of the century in the Netherlands.
