Lot No. 582

Nicola Maria Rossi

Naples c. 1690 – 1758)
Allegory of spring, oil on canvas, 75 x 96 cm, framed

Nicola Maria Rossi was a Napolitan painter and pupil of Solimena. A comparable work by Rossi is ‘Juno und Argus’, a painting in a private collection (see N. Spinosa, Pittura Napoletana del Settecento da Barocco al Rococò, p. 244, ill. 120). The artist was active later for Count Harrach, the Austrian viceroy in Naples. He stayed in Vienna in 1726 where he was commissioned by the Marchese Rofrano, councillor at the court of Charles VI to produce fresco paintings for his gallery. He also executed a large painting depicting an allegory of virtue for him. We are grateful to Prof Riccardo Lattuada for his suggestion as regards this painting’s attribution after having examined it in the original.
