The present painting is an impressive portrayal of one of the most dramatic occurrences in the history of the city of Delft. On 12 October 1654 90,000 pounds of gunpowder exploded in a powerful detonation in an old powder tower. Hundreds of people died, including the painter, Carel Fabritius who was only 32. The entire Netherlands felt sympathy for the fate of the city and this catastrophe became part of the national identity of the young state.
