Simon de Vos
(Antwerp 1603–1676)
Bacchanal in a grotto, oil on panel, 53.5 x 78.5 cm, framed
Provenance: Belgian private collection.
A second and slightly altered version of this composition was sold at Sotheby’s, Amsterdam, on 1 Dec. 2009, lot 19. The present painting is a characteristic work of high quality by Simon de Vos, who had been a student of the portraitist and history painter Cornelis de Vos. His colourful genre paintings, which number among the best works of the Flemish Baroque, are unthinkable without Rubens’s influence. In 1620, the painter became a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp. Simon de Vos was a highly successful artist who managed to sell his paintings throughout Europe through the agency of art dealers in Antwerp and Seville.
