(Venice 1712 – 1793)
Saint Cecilia, oil on canvas, 90 x 131 cm, framed

Literature: E. Martini, Pittura Veneta dal Ricci al Guardi, Venice 1977, p. 58, pl. 45

Religious subjects are rare in the work of Francesco Guardi. However, they are always of superior quality, so that should be appreciated all the more within an artistic output in which view painitings or vedute prevail. Unlike his father Gianantonio, who painted almost exclusively religious themes, Francesco, under the influence of the Enlightenment and for reasons of more profitable sales, intensely devoted himself to topographical painting, public interest for sacred art having diminished. Due to its graceful and refined composition, the present painting should be considered a masterpiece of the Venetian Rococo.
