(Vienna 1694 - 1757 St. Pölten), attributed to, Christ and the Centurion of Capernaum, oil on canvas, 64 x 37 cm, original Austrian Baroque frame, c. 1700.
The present painting seems to be a preparatory sketch for the monumental altarpiece at St. Charles’s Church in Vienna (according to information supplied by Dr. Johannes Kronbichler, director of the Museo Diocesane in Bressanone, to the painting’s previous owner). Asked by a heathen centurion to cure his sick servant, Jesus wanted to pay the latter a visit at the centurion’s home. However, the centurion refused: “Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof; but speak the word only and my servant shall be healed.” And so it came to pass. Literature: comp.
