Provenance: private collection, Vienna. Nooms was an Amsterdam-based marine painter dependent on Willem van de Velde. Our painting features a preferred motif of his, which he depicted repeatedly: a three-master turned over for caulking or repair (comp. L. J. Bol, Die holländische Marinemalerei des 17. Jahrhunderts, Braunschweig 1973, p. 291, fig. 292; also compare the painting sold at Lempertz’s, Cologne, on 18 Nov. 2006 as lot 1110).
