(Copyist, active in the early 20th Century) Portrait of the Saxon Field Marshall-General, 6th Baron Reuss (16491697), after a 17th Century painting in castle Greiz in Thuringia, signed by the copyist veso and dated 1911, also with a biography of the sitter, oil on canvas, 140 x 107 cm, framed, (GS)
Provenance: The Princes of Reuss, Greiz; Marie Freifrau of Gnagnoni, Princess Reuss (the Princess was the daughter of the last Prince Reuss; her sister Hermine, widowed Princess of Schoenaich-Carolath, was the second wife of Kaiser Wilhelm II). Baron Heinrich VI of Reuss (married first to Baroness Amalie Juliane Reuss, and then to Henriette Amalie Freiin of Friesen), was an important military leader, who excelled in the war against the Turks. He died from wounds incurred at the Battle of Zenta. Before his last battle he cried out to those around him: "It is now, that the honest fighters and praiseworthy ones will die. I will triumph alongside you, or die myself. None shall do even the tiniest amount more than I shall do...".
