Circle of Anne-Louis Girodet

Anne-Louis Girodet was admitted to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in Paris in 1783, where he studied under Jacques-Louis David from 1784 onwards. The atmosphere in David’s studio spurred his ambition to measure himself with his master. In 1786 he successfully competed for the Prix de Rome, winning a gold medal. In 1790-1795 he received a royal scholarship for a study visit to Rome. He subsequently travelled to Naples, Venice and Florence. He returned to Paris in 1810 and took part in the anniversary exhibition of the Paris Salon, where he was awarded a gold medal.
