the drunk faun on rock base, holding on to one another, between them a basket of grapes, the child reaching for it, at his feet a pan flute, biscuit-porcelain, reverse side inscribed Clodion, Height: 40 cm, Ø 22,5 cm, the rim of the base and 1 grape leaf minutely chipped, the round base with moulded blossom frieze and laurel wreath, Height: 8 cm, Ø 27,5 cm, traces of wear France, 2nd half 19th cent. (Ru)

Thieme-Becker, VII, p. 100: Clodion (real name Claude Michel), French sculptor, Nancy 20 December 1736 – Paris 28 March 1814; one of the most important representatives of French plastic arts in the 18th century; received the grand prix de sculpture in 1759; commissions from Duc de la Rochefoucauld ad Catherine II; marble statues for the palace park at Versailles and Parc de Saint-Cloud); numerous salon exhibitions; commissions from private collectors, models for the porcelain works at Niderviller; works included in numerous museum collections; Bacchante with Faun in the Chalons-sur-Marne museum.
