We are grateful to Fred Meijer, who confirmed the present painting as an autograph work by Isaac van Ostade. It is comparable to another work by Isaac van Ostade from 1641 in a German private collection (see W. Bernt, Die Niederländischen Maler des 17. Jahrhunderts, vol. II, Munich 1969, no. 892), and to a painting by the artist in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow (1640–44). The present painting once bore a false signature for Adriaen van Ostade.
