Provenance:
Marquis de Courtarvel Pezé (according to an engraving with the coat-of-arms on the reverse)
A comparable signed painting by Abraham Willemsen, Minerva and the Muses on the Parnass, was sold at Christie’s, London, 29 March 1968, lot 70. The landscape background of this painting has been tentatively attributed to the Antwerp painter Gaspar de Witte (1624–1681). We are grateful to Fred Meijer for endorsing the attribution to Abraham Willemsen.
