Johann Friedrich August Tischbein, a pair (2) - Old Master Paintings

Portrait of Louis François, Marquis de Chambray (1737–1807) and his wife, née Vernier de Joyencourt,
The portrait of the man is signed and indistinctly dated lower left: JF (ligated). Tischbein, the portrait of the woman signed and dated lower right: JF (ligated) Tischbein f. 1776,

The Marquis de Chambray, member of an old noble family from Normandy, was a distinguished officer and in 1788 was appointed Maréchal de Camp. In 1789 he represented the City of Evreux in the ‘États Generaux’. A defender of the Ancien Régime, he was forced to emigrate. He subsequently went to Vienna, where he spent the rest of his life.
