Frederik Goodall - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(London 1822-1904) "Queen Henrietta Maria and her children on the river", signed F. Goodall, watercolour on paper, 33 x 43 cm, framed, (Hu)

The motif exists in three variants; two of them are oil paintings. "Queen Henrietta Maria and her children" is a more detailed version of Goodall's work for the Royal Academy "The happier days of Charles I" of 1853. In 1852 the artist spent several months on a houseboat on the river Thames and made studies for the painting. Frederic Goodall studied at the private Wellington Road Academy and got in contact with Charles Dickens und John Ruskin already as a young man. He became famous for his romantic scenes of village life and historic events. In 1863 he became a member of the Royal Academy. His works are preserved in the Tate Gallery and in the Victoria & Albert Museum.
