Rudolf von Alt
(Vienna 1812-1905)
A view from the Malerwinkel at the northern banks of Königssees seen against Archenwand, inscribed Rudolf Alt, titled and dated Königsee 1828, pencil, watercolour on paper, 19 x 24 cm, mounted, unframed, (Hu)
The present sheet is one of Rudolf Alt’s early pencil drawings which he made during one of his first journeys with his father:
“… It is thus not surprising that the earliest autonomously executed works we know by the hand of Rudolf were motifs from Salzburg and/or made in areas such as the Salzkammergut… The majority of them were pencil drawings in watercolour … that were captured immediately in front of nature. At first glance it seems that many of them remained unfinished; however, it is the degree and the manner of the incomplete – the partly leaving the pencil drawing and the rhythm of watercoloured areas and the white blanks of the paper surface – which make these sheets particularly appealing. (Maria Luise Sternath, Die frühen Schaffensjahre - Alpenwanderungen, in: Katalog Rudolf von Alt, Albertina 2005, p. 77f).
