formerly Senta and Alfred Marnau Collection / London.
The writer Alfred Marnau emigrated to London in 1938 and became friends with the artist in 1944. For Marnau’s novel “Das Verlangen nach der Hölle” Kokoschka created a frontispiece. Marnau, in turn, published Kokoschka’s “Berichte aus einer eingebildeten Welt. Erinnerungen und Erzählungen”. The dedication reads: “Für meine Liebsten, Senta und Fredl. Auch mir sind die Trauben zu groß. Aber macht nichts, einmal werde ich noch was gutes malen im Leben” [For my dearest Senta and Fredl. For me too the grapes are too sour. But it’s o.k. Sooner or later I will manage to paint something good again in my life]
