Lot No. 78

An unusual aboriginal Australian Churinga. 19th century or earlier.

An unusual aboriginal Australian Churinga. 19th century or earlier. - Tribal Art

Wood, 48,5 cm. While Churinga are usually designed as flattened lozenge-shaped planks with incised designs, this rare example is carved in the round, more like the smaller carvings known as 'message sticks'. In fact, both serve similar roles in that they are related to memory: the distinctive patterns carved there on, are unique to each Churinga.
