Lot No. 73

An important and large Kakame figure, Iwaino people, Wapo Creek, Papua New Guinea.

An important and large Kakame figure, Iwaino people, Wapo Creek, Papua New Guinea. - Tribal Art

Early 20th century. Wood, 132 cm. The kakame, often referred to as a 'dancing figure', is made from naturally grown branches, chosen for its similarity to a human form. The sculptural element is further emphasized by decorating and dressing the object. A face has been carefully cut out and colored with ochre and lime, often these figures were 'dressed' with skirts and bags. On both sides of the face two holes have been provided where originally plant fibers were inserted. The kakame is kept with the 'treasure', trophies of hunted animals. The forces of these trophies, the skull to which he is connected, are magically charged together.

Provenance
Belgian private collection. Meyer family, Paris (with documentation).
