Solomon Islands, 18th-19th century. Wood, stone and fibers. 39 cm. This is a very fine example of an early collected club. A battle stone is woven into a basket and attached to a wooden handle with an intricate latticework. 'Limited to those men who claimed the payment of blood money for a life which they had taken. The payment of blood money, after the "Mala" fashion, was made at a feast given for the purpose... they are supposed to give power to the bearer when carried in war suspended around the k, the head uppermost and the staff down the center of the back. A string fastened just below the head of the club... is used to carry them in this position.' D. Waite, "Art of the Solomon Islands", p. 132.
