A very important Fang 'Elephant mask'. Central Ogooue, Woleu-Ntem, Gabon. Early 20th Century. - Tribal Art

Wood, 51 cm. There are but a few masks in public collections attributed to this small workshop of large elephantlike masks. Each with a large bladelike nose, continuing in forward and overhanging eyebrows. Each has bulbous eyes, a small protruding mouth and bright red, black and white polychrome, half-moon ears and a large flat forehead. The great cubistic features of these masks were probably the reason we can find one in the early collection of Pablo Picasso.
